Hey folks! We’re keeping this suggestion alive (no worries there) but I wanted to outline the expected restrictions for this for future voters.

Themes don’t have the ability to create new data storage systems within Shopify, and so we would need to rely on a browser’s local storage to make this happen.

What that means is the customer’s wishlist would only exist per browser, as long as the browser accepts the usage of local storage (similar concept to cookies) and doesn’t have them cleared. Going further into account-based storage requires something like an app. An example of a section that does something similar today is the “Recently viewed” section, but that data is gathered automatically.

I have some bad news regarding a wishlist feature. Unfortunately, Shopify has made it clear that certain features must be apps, and cannot be a theme feature. Wishlist is one of their exact examples of such a thing, which means even if we tried it wouldn’t get past them. Coupled with the above issue of a lack of persistence of the wishlist, we’ve decided we have to retire this suggestion as it’s not feasible for a theme feature.

Sorry about that! Hopefully this helps any of you decide on a Wishlist app if you were holding out for the possibility here.
