When you select a fixed ratio (1:1, 2:3 or 3:2) it will cut the image instead of containing theme inside that ratio (see screenshot for example).
A natural ratio setting wouldn’t work too since it’s too big for the product page. Stiletto has similar “contain” feature on the product listings page but not on the product display page.
