Cart: Option to show recommended products from Search & Discovery app#50

Would be great to be able to add recommened products to the cart via dynamic sources as it’s already possible on the product page

Thanks for adding some capability for this. It would be even better to have recommended items based on shopify’s Search & Discovery app so that recommendations can be personalized based on each customer, instead of just only one collection or product list.

Hi folks! I wanted to touch base with you all about this suggestion, and see what you think. We’ve been looking into it, and have come around to a potential roadblock with implementing it.

While it’s true that we have this feature available on the product template as the Recommended products section, this is naturally possible in Shopify due to a product template only have one product at a time. Thereby, it’s capable of quickly making a request to Shopify for one product’s recommendations.

The trouble we’re seeing with a cart implementation is that we would need to make this request for each product in the cart. This would be very slow, potentially so slow that we don’t think it’s a viable option. It’s unfortunately something that’s more suited to an app since an app can do this before loading the page (themes cannot).

Before bringing this suggestion to a close, however, I wanted to ask if those of you here would still find it useful if the cart’s recommended products was only based on the most recently added product? This would allow it to make dynamic suggestions as a customer shops, while keeping the performance up.

Jordan, Thanks for asking us! This seems like a good thing to add to the theme, as it is nice to have some dynamic options in the cart. So, with this potential solution, would we lose the ability to choose static products in the cart, or would this be an option to choose dynamic products based on the most recently added product OR static products?

Hi Ellie, that’s a great question! We’d definitely keep the ability to switch your source of recommendations, adding one extra option to the existing “From collection” and “From product list”. This would be similar to the Complementary products block in the Product template’s Product overview (attached screenshot).
